â€Å"The Great Gatsby offers a bleak perspective on American society.† Discuss The novel â€Å"The Great Gatsby† written by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of a group of people living on an imaginary city close to the New York city. the story is more concentrated on the character of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious rich man who making big parties to attract his love, Daisy Buchanan and how is he trying to win her. A deep reading of the novel shows that in addition to the love story, the writer is more concerned to shows the social life and relationships of people in American society in the 1920s. This essay will argue that the writer wanted to show the bleak perspective of American society on that time. In order to show this, the essay will†¦show more content†¦This evidence clearly shows that Daisy used her charm to catch a wealthy husband but since she is smart, she knows about Tom’s relationship with other women but she cannot do anything but suffering. She cannot even accept that Tom is the father of her child and she thinks that the chil d is her’s not Tom’s. This is shown by her saying that â€Å"she doesn’t look like her father. She looks like me†(p.112). Based on these pieces of evidence, even wealthy women who seemed to have a good life were enduring from their situation and had no power to control their own lives. Myrtle a woman from the lowest social class is living under the pressure of poverty and under the control of her needy husband.Both Myrtle and Gatsby pursuit the dream of changing their lives however, Gatsby has the ability to go to the New York but Wilson keeps Myrtle like a prisoner. Wilson even decided to move her to the â€Å"West Egg† and she could not do anything for her freedom because she was a woman and she was under the control of her husband and her escape from her husband led to her death. The writer shows her as the first person who was killed and Buchanans who were responsible for her death didn’t give any values to her. This clearly means that w omen from lower social class has no value in society and harm the most. She is optimistic to change her life by having affairs with Tom, however in addition to her husband,
